What is Trauma?
We often think of trauma in the context of a distressing event or situation that we went through and are conscious of, when the reality is that trauma can also be caused by any situation where we feel simultaneously overwhelmed and unsafe to process the emotions, distress or fear that we are experiencing at that time.
Trauma can also be caused by unmet needs, particularly in childhood and in unhealthy/ unsafe environments or relationships at any life stage, where we experienced threat to our safety, sense of self or autonomy.
We can potentially be impacted by inter-generational trauma, birth trauma, pre- conscious trauma, attachment trauma, developmental trauma, medical trauma, acute or ‘shock’ tauma and collective trauma as we continue to grow and develop into adulthood and beyond. Trauma is often multi-layered and complex, referred to as complex post traumatic stress disorder ( CPTSD ), when a person is diagnosed by a medical clinician, however, the reality is that we all carry traumatic imprint to varying degrees.
Any negative experience which causes overwhelm or unresolved emotional wounds, including loss, grief, betrayal and more, can result in traumatic imprint.
Although it's true that what may be traumatic to one person may not be to another, in essence, we experience trauma when our sense of safety is threatened and we are unable to find a way to keep ourselves safe while under threat, or another safe person to co-regulate with during the event.
The unresolved overwhelm including the emotions, distress, fear and energy associated with the traumatic experience results in traumatic imprint which is held in our bodies at a physical, emotional and subconscious level, causing nervous system dysregulation, subconscious imprinting and trauma loops that continue to repeat until the traumatic imprint can be resolved.
The ‘parts’ of us that are unable to cope during the trauma, shut down over time, resulting in ‘orphaned’ or fragmented parts and dissociation.
When traumatic imprint remains unresolved, our bodies subsequently adapt in efforts to keep ourselves safe, causing our nervous systems to be on high alert or hypervigilant, in an effort to assess risk to our safety and to avoid future threats.
We develop protective mechanisms or survival responses, presenting as triggers and most commonly known as fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses. These survival rsponses develop patterns of behaviour, keeping us stuck and unable to move forward, until we are able to safely embody and resolve the stored traumatic imprint and allow the trauma response to complete.
It is widely known and accepted that traditional ‘top down’ talking therapies, can only assist us to understand trauma and how it may impact us and that talking about traumatic events only serves to re-traumatise the person sharing their experience.
More recent research and development of ‘bottom up’, somatic trauma therapies such as Embodied Processing, pioneered by leaders in trauma healing over the past few decades worldwide, focus on gently increasing the body’s capacity to safely embody unresolved traumatic imprint, enabling it to begin to complete and discharge, facilitating nervous system and emotional regulation, integration and long term trauma healing.
How does Embodied Processing facilitate trauma healing?
Traditional ‘top down’ talking therapies do not help to resolve traumatic imprint stored in the body. Talking about trauma and traumatic events doesn’t help us to resolve it and often results in a person being re-traumatised.
Embodied Processing is a ‘bottom up’ and holistic, guided somatic trauma therapy, working with undischarged trauma stored in the body, emotions, subconscious mind and nervous system.
Everything that ‘comes up’ for us in our daily life that triggers a nervous system response, has roots in unresolved traumatic imprint, causing nervous system and emotional dysregulation, negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, trauma loops and survival patterns.
As an Embodied Processing Practitioner, I gently guide you to develop and anchor in a resource of safety, connect and attune with your body, then begin to ‘invite in’ what is coming up for you, to be safely explored and resolved.
Through gently touching into and exploring through the associated sensations, energy, images, thoughts, beliefs and emotions stored in your body and subconscious that are rooted in trauma, we begin to allow the imprint to discharge and resolve and trauma loops to complete and close.
Through Embodied Processing, we gradually grow in capacity to experience and process uncomfortable sensations and emotions and to begin to heal and gently re-integrate the innate parts of yourself that were orphaned in trauma.
Rather than focusing on the trauma, re-living it or talking about it, this safe and gentle transformative process enables you to discharge the negative thoughts, false beliefs and stored energy and emotions rooted in traumatic imprint, allowing the nervous system to re-organise itself and return to regulation, while growing in capacity to move in and out of stress in daily life.
We begin to return to safety, emotional mastery, our authentic nature and connection, wholeness and healing.
